The credit card as we know it is often credited to Frank McNamara, who came up with Diners Club in 1949. However, Edward Bellamy described the idea of using cards to buy things in a book called Looking Backwards in 1887.

The concept of credit cards was developed by a few different individuals and companies. However, the first successful implementation of a credit card system is credited to Frank McNamara, Ralph Schneider, and Matty Simmons. In 1950, they founded Diners Club International, which issued the first universal credit card. This card allowed customers to charge their meals at various restaurants and pay the bill at a later date. The success of Diners Club International paved the way for the modern credit card industry that we know today.
